2023 Year in Review & What’s Next

As 2023 has just drawn to a close, I wanted to make a quick post reviewing last year and talking about what’s next for me in 2024! If you saw any social media posts from me yesterday, you probably know what’s next, but if not… read on to find out!

It’s no secret that one of my biggest accomplishments this year was publishing my Gothic Bluebeard retelling, The Bloody Key! Since I never got around to doing a launch blog post, here’s the beautiful cover again…

Along with the character art and snippets from a few of my favorite reviews from this year!

I really appreciate everyone who has left reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, B&N, and other platforms! They are honestly like gold to indie authors. If you’ve read The Bloody Key and haven’t left a review, please consider doing so on one of these platforms, as it really helps to reach more readers! If you send me an email linking your review, I’ll even send you a postcard of Anne & Liesl. 🙂

This October marked the four-year anniversary of We Survivors’ publication date. I can’t believe it has been so long! I shared this picture of my We Survivors shelf to celebrate. Some of you know that I do intend for We Survivors to be a series–a trilogy, in fact. I’m hoping to have an announcement about the continued adventures of Nadia & company for the five-year anniversary next year…

I continued to write and revise projects this year, including working on the zero draft of a historical heist novel for NaNoWriMo this year. See the moodboard below for an idea of the setting, time period, and atmosphere of the novel. I’m excited to continue it in 2024!

As a reminder, I’m active on Twitter/X, Instagram, and–as of this year–Threads! I’ve also been posting the first few chapters of The Bloody Key as a sample on Wattpad, so I’ve been more active on that platform than I’ve been in years. Feel free to say hi if you are too!

Finally, I wanted to talk about my biggest news for next year… you’re getting another book from me in June 2024! Be sure you’re subscribed to my newsletter and following me on social media to make sure you don’t miss any details about it–like the cover reveal, preorder incentive, eARCs, and giveaways!

It’s a wintry YA fantasy inspired by Icelandic mythology, titled Songs of Snow! This moodboard gives a good idea of the book’s setting and atmosphere…

Finally, here is the mock cover and official blurb:

Banned magic. An ambitious huntress. A reluctant sorceress. A kingdom at stake.

Kata dreams of a life of wealth and glory, eradicating magic from her kingdom by hunting mythical beings. But when she finds a rare winged unicorn in the woods and fails to kill it, she’s unwillingly swept off to a mountain sanctuary for the very prey she longs to hunt.

Across the sea, Elín loves her simple farm life and is far too practical to believe in magic. When bounty hunters descend on her farm, believing Elín to be the last remaining snow sorceress, she’s forced to flee with a mysterious stranger. If she wants to survive to see her home again, she must travel to the shadowy ends of her world, find a lost book of spells, and learn to wield her newfound icy powers.

When they meet at the mountain sanctuary, Elín and Kata learn of an unexpected tether between them. Elín is eager to work together to reclaim the refugees’ homes—and her own—by defeating the king who banned magic. But there’s a hefty bounty on Elín’s life, and this is Kata’s chance to fulfill all her dearest-held dreams…

Fans of Viking Age fantasy, magical adventures like Margaret Rogerson’s Sorcery of Thorns, and wintry, fairy tale-inspired worlds like Naomi Novik’s Spinning Silver and Meagan Spooner’s Hunted will love this twist on Icelandic mythology.
